Leader of the Pack

Are you are a leader or follower?

The leader of the pack is the one who takes care of his people/pack. A pack leader isn’t a jerk or hateful. A true pack leader is bold, kind, strong, and can communicate strongly.

For those of you who don’t me well enough yet, I am a dog fan. A lot of my basic principals of leading my company come from raising dogs my whole life. Many people believe that dogs are just pets and don’t matter to much. Those people are wrong! If you are one of them, sorry you’re wrong. Don’t worry in this essay, we will find out why.

Dogs or wolves are noble creatures who communicate very strongly among their pack.  Every aspect of the pack is key to survival. Sounds a lot like your family or your job, right? It is, a pack is very much what you deal with every single day.

As stated earlier,  every aspect of the pack is needed to survive. The pack leader is key and every pack needs this. Someone in your family is the pack leader. He/she is the one who takes care of almost everything. They can’t show much fear and must protect the pack from all dangers.

In essence the pack leader is very much the boss of your company. They are the ones that take care of the entire company. Now if you have the type of boss who yells, fires at a drop of a dime, and just a plan jerk, you my friend have a horrible pack leader.

A good pack leader understands his pack. Like when you raise a dog, they respect you if you respect them. You have to be a little firm, but caring enough to understand who you are dealing with. Knowing members of your pack member’s strengths and weakness is key. After knowing the strengths and weakness, the pack leader can use them for  the right job. If done wrong then the boss/leader gets mad at the member when truly it’s the leader’s fault.

A major example of what I am rambling on today about is how I raise my pups. Midnight and Pesky see my wife and I as their pack. They look to me as the pack leader.  I give them tons of respect and in return they give us ours. We each have a role within our little pack. Pesky is the alarm who warns us of all dangers and is the last resort. Midnight is the protector who comes with me to see the dangers. Pesky stays back with the Alpha female (Alyssa) as Midnight and I take care of all threats.

Then it comes down to me the pack leader. I walk them, feed them, train them, play with them (which is another form of training), and make sure they are 100% safe. If they didn’t have a balance of where they stand in the pack and who the pack leader truly was they would end of getting upset. An upset dog leads to fear in a dog and fear leads to major issues. This all comes down to your work place.

Your work place needs to have the balance of knowing where you stand, where you are going, and who is leading the charge. The moment your boss or you (as the boss) loss that understanding is the moment the pack starts losing faith in you. This leads to fears, like is this job stable and can I stay here long term. Then one by one your pack starts leaving or acting up.  Once you loss the balance, you will have to work long and hard to earn it again.

Not everyone is a pack leader and that is 100% okay. The pack leader is one of the hardest position to have even though it’s the most desired. Only a selected few can harness this power. Sadly we have many pack leaders who truly don’t belong there. My advice to none pack leaders, be happy with your position and learn how to grow into over time.

Learning your place in the pack is a key tool in surviving in this Savage World, that you are no longer leaving in, but beginning to own!
