Being A Good Sport

TAKE THAT!

In light of the Superbowl last night, where we had an amazing game that came down truly to the last second and the whole world cheered. There was something to be said after the celebrations and the lights when out at Lucas Oil Field on February 5, 2012. Two teams enter, one came out a victor. It’s truly an amazing site to see even if your team didn’t win. The aftermath is what has become ugly and way to common lately in today’s world, the sore winners and losers.

Now, I am a 110% a Pats fan, always was and always will be. With that being said, there is no anger that my team didn’t win nor that the Giants won it. The game was great, it came down to the last second and the team that won, won fair and square. All you can do at the end of the day is tip your hat at them and move on.

There are two problems that happen after every game, the sore winner and the sore loser. Lets start off with the sore loser, cause it’s easier to discuss. These fans or parents of the kid who is playing a sport make the game less fun. You never want to be around a fan that is always saying, “My team lose, cause the refs are cheating!” Are there missed calls, yea that happens, human error. Still doesn’t mean you can be super upset that you lose the game.

There is a difference between a bitter fan who loses and a sad fan who loses. A sad fan, understands a lose is going to happen and has a right to be sad by it. You know they invest the time to cheer on their team that they love, so when they lose they are hurt and just want to deal with it in their own way.

A bitter fan who loses lashes out at people and that’s just not right. In the past, I use to be that guy at times and it wasn’t right. You need stand up tall and tell you friends who are fans or playing against you, good game and walk on. People would rather deal with a good loser then a bitter one.

Now the winners, well this is becoming too common. The I win and I am better than you concept. Look, when you win a game or do something great there is no need to gloat for a long time. If you are happy and cheering on the winning team GREAT! Do it, just don’t slam the loser cause something happens when you do.

For example, again I am a Pats and I love my teams. Everyone who knows this blogger, understands I am very passionate about what I love. When the Giants won and fans all over the world (Mostly not Giant fans), saw the catch go incomplete, they lite up the world laughing at the Patriots and their fans. Bashing the QB, head coach, WRs etc. Now how does that make me feel and the rest of the Patriot fans feel? We lose, we accepted it and we try to deal with it. But what happens with the slam and throwing us right in to the defense mode and makes us clearly upset.

This is what I am talking about with being a good sport, stop slamming the other team when you win or lose. Shake their hands, say good game, and walk on. You hurt people when you gloat and taunt the other end, winning or losing. It doesn’t matter who won the game if you’re a jerk. It’s called being honorable and I think sports is losing that in a way. Makes me a little sad.

Now, this blog isn’t about my feelings for the Pats and how they lost the game last night. It happens, but it’s becoming too common that I read trash talk from pro players, college players, high school players, and even middle school. Starting with the parents down, maybe I was raised different from my parents always telling me to be a good sport and say good game.

Every lose makes us better, every win should make us humble. There is never a need to celebrate a tackle on first down when the player goes two yards ahead, there is never a need to spike the ball on the logo in the center of the field at your rivals arena. When you play the game, play the game, and be respectful no need to boost or cry. Cause at the end, you may end up burning bridges, hurting friends and family members, and just not being seen as a good sport.

Being a good sport is key in this Savage World; that you are no longer just living in, but beginning to own!
